Can You Get Waxed On Your Period?

You can do anything with the right perspective. For some people, getting their period is a gift. For others, a curse. No matter what your period means to you, if you are a consistent wax client, or you’re preparing for your first waxing appointment, we’re here for you.

Depending on where you are in your period journey, you may be curious whether getting waxed on your period is even possible. The answer is a resounding yes, whether a bikini wax or Brazilian wax, we’ve got you covered. We’re here to help break down stigmas, misinformation, and answer any other questions you may have.

What to know about getting a wax on your period

Being on your period can sometimes make you feel like your world is upside down. The ebbs and flows of our chemistry can lead us to feel incredible some days, and off-kilter the next. Knowledge is power, and educating yourself is empowering yourself.

Your esthetician is there to support you!

The first thing to note while getting waxed on your period is that your esthetician is here to support you. And there’s nothing to be worried about, as people of all ages, sizes, body hair types, and walks of life deserve the respect and compassion needed to build a trusting relationship with your wax specialist. Your wax specialist is not grossed out by period blood or any other bodily fluids for that matter. We want you to know that we see clients on their period EVERY DAY and it is completely normal for us to perform your wax during this time.

You may be a bit more sensitive to pain and heat

During the menstrual cycle, The skin can be more sensitive to pain and heat sensitivity than normal. Estrogen supports the pumping and thickening and protection of the skin. Since those estrogen levels drop during your period, pain and sensitivity levels can be a bit higher than normal. This is not the case for everyone though and many clients comment that they are actually less sensitive to the wax during their cycle.

How to prepare for a wax on your period

can you get waxed on your period

Getting waxed on your period doesn’t have to be something you stress about! When you work with an esthetician who is well-versed in their craft, and very human, you just might find yourself pleasantly surprised at how well your session went.

What to wear for your appointment

When getting waxed, set yourself up for success by wearing loose clothing. Maybe your favorite pair of sweatpants or a dress that has a lot of room. If you are bleeding the day of your appointment, wear a menstrual cup, disc, or tampon while you’re getting waxed. Keeping the skin free of blood helps your esthetician by creating a better adherence surface for the wax itself. We have plenty of feminine wipes and fresh tampons if you need one. Be sure to empty your menstrual cup, disc, or put in a new tampon prior to arrival.

Make sure your pubic hair has grown out to at least a quarter inch to ensure maximum waxing efficiency, and take an over-the-counter painkiller about an hour before your appointment if you’re worried about pain and sensitivity.

Exfoliate a day before

Prior to your appointment, a gentle exfoliation around 24 hours prior to your appointment can help knock loose ingrown hairs, slough away dead skin cells, and prepare your skin for a perfect wax. Exfoliation is the greatest gift you can give to your skin, so prepping the surface will set you up for an even more successful appointment.

Consider a hydrojelly mask add-on for redness and irritation

Whether you’re on or off your period during a wax session, adding a hydrojelly mask to keep redness and inflammation at bay is a great call. Your esthetician will happily add on the service for you if you decide that you need it.

Waxing aftercare

Waxing aftercare is just as important as the wax experience itself. By keeping just a couple of things in mind, you can set your skin up for happy, healthy healing by having a little intention around your post-wax activities.

Things to avoid after your wax

After waxing, avoid the sun and be careful not to over-exfoliate. You will want to skip the sauna, hot yoga, and swimming.  Hit the pause button on spray tans, be intentional with your skincare and take a couple of showers instead of baths. As exciting as it may be to share your fresh, new skin with your partner, refraining from sex for about 48 hours can speed up your recovery time and keep you from a rash that nightmares are made of.

How to prevent ingrown hairs

There are a few methods to prevent ingrown hairs, especially as your pubic hair grows back. The best thing you can do for your skin is to have a consistent exfoliation regimen dialed into your skincare routine. Exfoliation is a crucial part of attaining smooth, soft skin, free of ingrown hairs, bumps, and uneven skin texture. You can exfoliate with one of our many body scrubs, exfoliating serums, or exfoliating tools we offer in the salon. It is important that you only use the exfoliating product your waxer recommends as they have analyzed your skin and know what's best to keep your skin healthy.
