Why You Should Start Waxing in Winter
Surprise! I bet you weren't expecting that there’s a best time to begin waxing, let alone winter! For those looking to get on a regular routine, or are new to the process of waxing, winter is the best time of year to begin. Here at The Naked Cupcake, we’re here to walk you through every aspect of your waxing journey and help you along to loving the very skin you’re in.
A look at the hair growth cycle
To begin understanding when and how to begin your waxing journey, it is important to understand your hair growth cycle, how it works, and when it’s best to wax based on those factors. Let’s dive into the basics of the growth cycle and understand a little more about your body hair.
The anagen phase is the ideal time for waxing
Your hair growth cycle consists of three main stages: the anagen phase, catagen phase, and telogen phase. The anagen phase is the initial phase in which the hair itself is growing. The catagen phase is a short transitional phase where the lower part of the hair is cut off from any blood supply, and the telogen phase notates the period of time your hair stays stationary before falling out.
The optimized time for waxing is when your hair is in the growth (anagen) phase. The reason this is so important is due to the fact that when the hair is removed, it is still connected to the blood supply. In the anagen phase, waxing gets to the root and the overall structure of the hair follicle. A waxed follicle means longer regrowth and thinner density over time.
The many benefits of waxing during winter
While you may think that starting your waxing journey would be best in the summer, this actually is not the case. Sure, you may be more inclined to keep up with your routine if you knew that you’d be showing off your new wax at the pool or at the beach, but we’re here to explain why winter takes the cake as the best time to start waxing.
It takes several sessions to get your hair on the same cycle
If you haven't been waxing regularly already, you may not be aware of the fact that all of the hairs on your body grow at separate times. This concept is easily depicted by thinking about the hair on your head. Sure, you may have times where there seems to be a bit more loss from your scalp, but your hair never falls out all at one time before regrowing – can you imagine? The same principle works on all other parts of your body, with hair growing in different cycles.
As you begin to wax regularly, your hair regrowth cycles become synched, allowing for easier removal and longer lasting results. Instead of waxing every three to four weeks, your appointments will follow more closely to every four to six weeks.
Keep dry skin properly moisturized
One of the (arguably many) disadvantages of winter is that it can eat away at the moisture in your skin. That lack of moisture can cause flaky, itchy, dehydrated skin. If you start your waxing journey during the winter, you will be inclined to maintain a regular moisturizing regime to not only keep your skin feeling great, but looking great too.
Dry and flaky skin? Not on our watch!
Reduce the appearance of ingrown hairs
Because winter is known to give people dry, flaky skin, the risk for getting ingrown hairs immediately multiples. The good news is: If you’re waxing regularly throughout the winter, the likelihood of having ingrown hairs drops significantly. In fact, with regular exfoliation on your skin you’ll reduce razor burn & itchiness by ditching the razor and upgrading to waxing. As long as you follow your waxer’s home care regimen consistently, you’ll say goodbye to ingrown hairs forever!
A time for a little self-care
Lastly, if we’re being honest – it feels like the availability for self care opportunities is almost non-existent during the winter. Everyone is cold, stressed from the holidays, and just trying to make it through the day. Outside of getting a haircut or your nails done, treating yourself to a waxing service can be a real good opportunity for self care in the midst of a busy time of year!
