What You Need to Know Before Your First Brazilian Wax

We know it can be a little intimidating for some to make the decision to book their first brazilian wax. First of all, we’re excited that you’ve chosen to invest in how you look and feel, and are happy to share this with you! If this is your first time and you’re here to get a little insight on what to expect, we’ve got the perfect guide for you.

Here at The Naked Cupcake we’ve curated a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your waxing session, and how to take care of it once you’re done. We’ve also included a few extras we feel are important to know that go a little beyond the basics. Let’s dive in!

Tips that will help you have a successful first Brazilian wax experience

Okay - we’re going to start off today's guide by laying out some important pieces of information to help you better understand the waxing process and what’s required.

Expect the stages of hair growth to vary throughout the first few visits

One of the most common expectations about getting a brazilian wax is that the results last for weeks after your first session. Unfortunately, this just isn't true. If this is coming as a shock to you, that’s good! The reality is that your first brazilian wax is only going to tackle one portion of your growth cycle. Since your hair grows in different stages, there may be some new growth already surfacing prior to your waxing appointment. Because of this, it can take anywhere between 3 to 6 consistent waxing sessions before you get completely smooth results.

Gently exfoliate prior to your appointment to prevent ingrown hairs

Prior to any waxing appointment, it is important to exfoliate the area at least 24 hours beforehand. Gently exfoliate to remove any dead or dry skin that has accumulated. This leaves the area being waxed in perfect conditions for the wax to work its magic.

Give your body a break from sun exposure the week leading up to your appointment

Giving your body a break from sun exposure is vital. If your skin is burnt or has sun damage, your esthetician will not be able to work on you, due to increased chances of skin lifting and other unwanted side effects. It’s best to avoid sun both before and after your waxing appointment for best results.

Your Brazilian wax appointment at The Naked Cupcake

At The Naked Cupcake, we strive to ensure our clients are cared for and comfortable from the instant they schedule their appointment until the moment they’re walking out the door. We know how essential it is to work with a team of people you can trust when something as sacred and autonomous as your body is involved. We love to honor our clients and their agency by checking in, asking how we can meet their needs, and establishing trust by committing to our values.

A consultation so we get to know you and your skin

Setting up a consultation with your future esthetician is a great opportunity to build rapport and to identify your skincare goals. Your consultation will include discussion about the state of your skin, concerns and conditions, and what you hope to achieve by establishing a consistent regimen with a wax specialist. Your skin deserves the best care you can give it, and with an experienced wax specialist by your side, there’s nothing you can’t achieve!

What sets us apart from your average wax studio

If you have anxiety-inducing concerns, or fears like many of us do about our bodies, you are not alone. While those fears and anxious feelings are totally normal, we strive to love our bodies without apology and empower our clients to do the same. Every single body is so different, and each of us has loose skin, hemorrhoids, cesarean scars, pimples, discoloration, and labium of all shapes and sizes! It is a radical act to love your body, and we are so proud to foster that energy in our studio.

If you’ve never had a Brazilian wax before, or you’re establishing a relationship with a new wax studio due to poor past experiences, we see you and we’re grateful for the opportunity to turn your wax session into a reliable, comfortable and person-centered experience.

What to know about brazilian waxing aftercare

Outside of what not to do, we are here to provide you with what you should be doing in order to get the best results from your skin.

Refrain from tight clothing, wear breathable, loose-fitting clothing

Immediately after your wax, the clothes you wore are going to be put back on. If you choose to wear tight clothes that do not allow your skin to breathe, you will soon learn that this can cause problems for your fresh new wax. Tight clothes cause friction and irritation which can lead to irritated and inflamed skin. Try to avoid tight clothes for at least 24 hours following your waxing session.

Plan your “rest days” for two days after your waxing appointment

For those of us who enjoy spending time at the gym, it may be best to plan your wax on your rest days. Not only is working out added friction, but sweating and wearing gym attire can cause additional irritation and red bumps. Mitigate going to the gym for at least 24 hours, but allow for 48 if possible. This also means no sex for 48 hours as well. Friction causes further irritation to your newly waxed skin.

It’s all in the attention to detail; gentle exfoliation, SPF, and more

Although Brazilian waxing takes place in an intimate area, it’s still important to treat the area like you would any other part of your body being waxed. Ensure that the area is gently exfoliated two to three days following your appointment, and continue exfoliating 2 to 3 times a week after that. If you know you’ll be wearing a bikini or exposing that area to sunlight, ensure that an SPF is applied. Additionally, try to fit in a mild moisturizer and soothing body oils to ensure your skin stays hydrated.

Plan on scheduling appointments every 4-5 weeks with no trimming for consistent, flawless results

For best results, it is important to avoid shaving or trimming your hair between waxing sessions. While this may be difficult, it is the only way you can get consistent, long-lasting results.

Take home an exfoliant and moisturizer to get the best results at your next wax and prevent ingrown hairs

Once you’ve completed your wax, take this time to speak with your esthetician about proper aftercare for your skin type. During this time, you may be recommended specific products such as exfoliants, serums, creams, or moisturizers to help your skin flourish!
