Waxing While Pregnant: What You Should Know

Carrying a child comes with quite a few life adjustments along the way. It can feel like even some of the smallest things seem to have some sort of impact on the health and growth of your baby. So, when it comes to waxing, is getting some help with unwanted body hair still on the table? In this article, we will explore the considerations, precautions, and tips for ensuring a safe and comfortable waxing experience for expectant mothers.

Is waxing while pregnant safe?

You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that waxing during pregnancy is considered completely safe and effective during pregnancy! That being said, it’s always best to keep a few precautions in mind to ensure a hassle-free session. There are some changes that your body is going through, after all!

Making sure your waxing session goes well

Preparing for a waxing session while pregnant comes with just a few extra steps that should be kept in mind before showing up.

Go to an experienced, reputable waxing studio

A reputable studio with experienced professionals (such as Naked Cupcake) not only ensures a thorough and effective waxing experience, but also takes into account the unique needs and sensitivities of expectant mothers. Look for studios with a track record of catering to pregnant clients, as they are likely to be well-versed in techniques that accommodate your changing body and hormonal fluctuations.

Additionally, inquire about the types of products used to ensure they are pregnancy-safe and free from harsh chemicals. By choosing a trusted studio, you can feel confident in receiving a waxing treatment that prioritizes both your comfort and well-being throughout this special time.

Let your esthetician know ahead of your appointment

Prior to showing up to your appointment, consider reviewing what ingredients found in waxing products may be harmful or cause an allergic reaction to pregnant moms. If you’re ever unsure of what products are acceptable, please reach out to and discuss what options are available to our expecting moms until they give birth.

At The Naked Cupcake, we don’t use any back bar items harmful to expecting moms in our regular waxing services. You will want to opt out of some of our vajacial & brightening services until after your baby arrives, though!

Have the setting be as comfortable as you can make it

Looking for some more good news? At Naked Cupcake, we think that being as comfortable as possible is essential to getting waxed. It doesn't matter if it's something simple like removing your upper lip hair, or something more in depth like a full brazilian wax hair removal, always make sure you’ll have everything you need to be comfortable and happy. In the later weeks of pregnancy, we also incline the bed to have you avoid laying flat on your back and we use modified butterfly positions to help with back and hip pain.

Clear any complications you may have with your esthetician

If you have any specific complications or potential health concerns related to your pregnancy, do not hesitate to discuss them with your esthetician beforehand. This will help them tailor the waxing session to accommodate your needs and ensure a safe experience for both you and your baby prior to the baby’s due date.

We do recommend you ask your OB if you are able to take OTC Tylenol 30-45 minutes before your appointment. This can help with any additional pain or sensitivity due to pregnancy hormones.

Common questions about pregnancy and waxing

Expectant mothers can oftentimes find themselves stuck on similar questions surrounding the process of waxing while pregnant. We’ve broken down some of the most common questions below:

How do hormones affect the waxing appointment?

As discussed during one of our previous points, hormones are one of the key contributors to what changes when getting waxed while pregnant. Now, hormonal changes are highly dependent on the individual, so these effects will vary!

Expecting mothers may experience increased skin sensitivity, as well as an increased potential for ingrown hairs and irritated skin – especially along the bikini line. Your rate of hair growth may be a bit faster while you’re pregnant too, requiring you to book a follow-up appointment sooner than you’re used to.

Does the area you get waxed on matter?

Whether you need help removing pubic hair recently made inaccessible due to your growing belly, or simply want help reaching all sides of your legs, the location of your wax really does not matter. Since some areas (like a bikini wax) may be more sensitive than others, discuss what pain relievers can be taken in order to reduce sensitivity.

Is it common to get waxed while pregnant?

Whether or not to wax while pregnant simply boils down to personal preference. While some may take a more laid back approach, you may prefer the help of an esthetician to feel some normalcy during your pregnancy and have a moment of self-care.
